California's highest court agreed Wednesday to hear several legal challenges to the state's new ban on same-sex marriage but refused to allow gay couples to resume marrying before it rules.

Bay Area Air District Announces Winter Spare the Air Alert
Stating today, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) has issued a winter Spare the Air alert. From now until the end of February 2009, it will be illegal to burn wood in fireplaces, woodstoves, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits and any other wood-burning devices.

Fremont's Nummi Plant Workers Watch Auto Bailout Talks
Few people in the Bay Area are watching negotiations over a proposed government bailout of the auto industry as closely as the folks who work at the Nummi plant in Fremont. Workers at the plant, which is a joint effort of GM and Toyota, have already been told they will have to take two days off without pay in December because of the financial crisis.
