Video: BMW Rolls Out M3 Racing Version

Date posted: 07-14-2008

MUNICH, Germany — BMW first took the wraps off its racing version of the M3 at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show in February. Now the automaker has posted fresh video on the Internet showing the maiden track voyage of the feisty race-tuned M3.

The car was prepared by BMW M and features a 4.0-liter V8 that lays down 485 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a six-speed sequential racing transmission with a carbon-fiber clutch and a mechanical limited-slip differential. BMW engineers have lightened and widened the chassis. Even with the addition of a few aerodynamic exterior modifications, the car still has a curb weight of only 2,535 pounds.

It took BMW M more than a year to build the car, which has been designed to compete in the American Le Mans Series starting in 2009.

What this means to you: There is still no news yet if any of the performance mods will make it to the street version of the M3. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
