This was one of my design papers with a team. We only reviewed <$20. But in my research, I know there are some other remotes like the kameleon. There's also palm based remotes that you can buy. I would look for a remote that has generic buttons for controls that might not be typical and with lcd displays so they are properly labeled instead of being button 1, 2, etc. Being able to hook up to your computer to download codes is an awesome feature, but if there is a system or code that doesn't get put on the remote, the ability to take the original remote and shoot it at the universal remote to capture codes is even better.

I strongly urge you to go pick the remote you're looking at [especially at $90 O.o] and make sure you like the button grouping. I have a friend who has a remote that I can never find the volume control. That's insane not to be able to find basic controls. It's annoying not to be able to find secondary controls like input/line. Sometimes more is less.

Glowing buttons are good with a remote with a gagillion buttons. Like I said earlier, less is more, but with all the stuff I think you're wanting to control, lit up buttons are a must.

I can't think of more since it's 6 am. I'll try to dig up my old report for other points.

  • Dang, I didn't realize there was so much to a remote. I'm like -- does it turn on the tv? volume? sweet, I'll take it.

  • I have Logitech's Harmony 880 universal remote. It has as many buttons as the one in the Click movie with Adam Sandler.
Only drawback is that you must configure it using Logitech's bloated software that you install on your computer.
Works pretty well though, if you can figure out how to program it...
It glows, ergonomic and slick looking. Has a color display (wish it was touch screen though), and one touch programmable buttons.

    • Wow, you paid like 200+ for a remote? That's intense. Does it have a button to do your laundry or something?

      • Well, I 'borrowed' it from home when I visited for the holidays.
It eyed it 6 months prior when I visited, and did not move from where I saw it before. So I figured no one would miss it :)
