Watching the web news.
Apparently fire on the north end of the base is under control.
Fire on the south is not.
So people towards the south (such as in Oceanside), likely can't evacuate in that direction yet.
Nearly one million people evacuated. That's almost the entire population of San Jose!
The devastation down in Souther California must be enormous.
My mom and my little brothers live in Oceanside, which seems to be safe at the moment.
The devastation down there must be unfathomable.
My mom and 3 of my little brothers live in Oceanside, which is as of today fire-locked. There's no place for them to escape if the fire spreads more to the coast.
The northern route through I-5 is now blocked.
Camp Pendleton (15 miles north of Ocean Side) is burning. 6,000 acres so far, and only 10% contained. So that is out.
The eastern route is a no go, that takes you straight into the fire zone.
The southern route to San Diego is also blocked. There is a large fire burning just a few miles off the highway as well. That's also about 15 miles south of Oceanside.
My Mom says she has started packing the car. Her neighbors are doing the same.
They are already voluntarily evacuating... but where will they go? Probably to a nearby shelter.
My thoughts are with them!

Just wanted to blog real quick, because there's not much else I can do from 300 miles away.
I was online, and my mom was chatting with me at 3:05 pm she said the fire was 300 feet away from her home in Ocean Side.
As I was talking she said the house was on fire, so I told her to get out of there.
That's the last I heard from her. It's been an agonizing 10 minutes.
Ok, I figured out that the fire my mom is talking about is the Rice Canyon fire.
Looks like 200 homes destroyed in that area.
Fire is about 15% contained, and around 8,000 acres burned.
They are still fighting the flames.
3000 people at the Valley Center High school evacuation center.
No open flame in the Paradise Mountain area.

In the canyon behind her house there are homes burning, and helicopters are dousing the fames.
Mom says she doesn't see any fires. Apparently her home is ok. Whew.
